PCMs on the basis of salt hydrates are characterized by their extreme
supercooling behaviour. Nucleating agents are used to trigger crystallization
and to therefore release the stored heat. Nucleation occurs when
the supercooled melts have surfaces that are chemically similar
to the growth surfaces of the PCM. In this vein, algorithms have
been developed to search crystal structure data for similar growth
surfaces.
The ATBEL program carries out a morphology prognosis,
determines the atomic layout of the crystal surfaces and stores
the information in a database.
This crystal surfaces database is used by the program
EPITAX to search for similar crystal surfaces.
